Regional coffee
An Ethiopian legend tells of a young shepherd named Kaldi and his herd of goats and how one day they unexpectedly came across a dozen small trees with lots of red cherries. They were not ordinary cherries because when his herd ate these cherries they became extraordinarily alert and alive. Even Kaldi tried the cherries and was very pleased that they gave him enough energy to keep a closer eye on his goats all night long. One day Kaldi told a monk about this unusual fruit. Soon after, all the monks ate these magnificent cherries and enjoyed their power to replenish themselves.
Many people believe that Ethiopia is the birthplace of the Arabica coffee tree. The tree grows best at altitudes of 1,200-1,800 meters. The main harvest is from October to December. Only 2% of the crop is owned by the government. Almost half of the population works for some kind of coffee farm. Therefore, coffee plays a big role in the Ethiopian economy. 98% of Ethiopian coffee (which includes our Sidamo) is planted by small coffee farms whose farms are no larger than one hectare. This allows farmers to take more careful care of their plantation. This is later noticeable with the aroma that the coffee gives off in your cup. The Sidamo takes the name of its origin, which is in the southern part of Ethiopia and under the Yirgacheffe region.
